The artist

Emotions form the foundation for creating art.

Black Lady, 1999, acrylic on canvas on board, by Kaami
Black Lady 1999. Acrylic, canvas on board, 39 x 47 in. The master piece.

Kaami is a futuristic visual artist working in Toronto. He sorts emotion in his own way and pairs each feeling with a form. A piece starts from one emotion, is taken apart to its core, then rebuilt through a personal method he calls the Zen Technique.

The result is a futuristic expression of feeling, and the method keeps changing with each new era of the work: figures cut from black and filled with fine hatched colour, portraits half human and half machine, gestures in a single line, limbs crosshatched in blue at five feet tall, the seasons laid in cotton thread, and watercolour poured and left to find its own shape.

Wind, water, stone and sky run through all of it. Twenty five years separate Black Lady, painted in 1999, from the watercolours of 2024, and the same pull toward nature and civilization is in both.

The Zen Technique

  1. Feel. Each piece starts from one emotion, named and held.
  2. Take apart. The feeling is reduced to its core: a gesture, a line, a colour.
  3. Rebuild. The form is put back together, line by line, until the feeling is in it.
